I am no Shakespeare!
Okay, so I am no poet. By any stretch of the imagination. Though I have always had a love for reading and writing (I used to want to be a journalist and dream about maybe one day writing a book... its a just a dream though), I have very little taste or talent for poetry. But as I was going through files on my computer and trying to find papers to show my dad as an example for formatting purposes (he is studying for his Masters and wasn't familiar with the new Turabian formatting our school recently switched to), I found this "poem" that I had written for my Pentateuch class my sophomore year. It doesn't rhyme, the rhythm is off and the lines have no pattern. But it's my re-telling of the story of Abraham and Isaac. Feel free to laugh or smirk in reading it. I know it's not anything close to Shakespeare. But I thought it was worth sharing. So, without further ado... my "poetry." :)
A Calling, a Promise and a Test
One day Yahweh called
to a man by the name of Abram,
He told him to leave
his home and go to a new land.
This man had a great
faith,
But he was a little
uncertain at first.
The idea of leaving
his home, his family,
To go where? To an
unknown land?
He questioned what
the point was.
But he held to his
faith and believed
That Yahweh would not
be one to deceive.
This calling from
Yahweh was a strange one indeed,
But Abram was one not
one to argue and so he agreed.
He packed up his
family and said his goodbyes
To the home he had
known for all of his life.
He set out to a place
he was not sure about,
Relying on Yahweh rather
than doubt.
Along with this
calling, there came a promise.
This promise included
a seed, a land and a blessing.
The seed would be the
beginning of a great nation,
Which would lead to a
land.
And the blessing
would be seen to the end.
This promise was of
great importance,
And would one day
lead to one
Who was promised in
the days of the Garden.
The seed had come in
the form of a son.
And then Yahweh asked
for the unthinkable to be done.
The day had come for
the promise to be tested.
And Yahweh asked for
the boy’s life to be given to Him.
Abram responded with
faith and led his son to the altar.
And at the very last
moment Yahweh called out
To stay the knife in
Abram’s hand.
Abram’s faith and
lack of doubt passed the test,
And ensured the
blessing and promise would be fulfilled.
Because of his faith,
he became the father of all nations.
And it all began with
a call and a promise.
