The day I met My Love (#31DaysofMemories)
It was a sunny, warm day in August 2008. I was a sophomore at Lincoln Christian University and moving in early in order to help with freshman orientation.
Now, some background... During my freshman year (2007-2008), I had been a part of the co-ed soccer team as the team manager and stat-keeper. It was a great season and I made some amazing friends, some of whom are now like family. Spending my time with the team helped me come out of my shell and feel comfortable around people. Not to mention it later taught me a lot of lessons about myself and other people.
Well, my sophomore year was going to be incredibly busy with a full load of classwork, my two on-campus jobs, my service learning hours (our ministry hours we served each semester) and let's not forget my social life with some of the best girl-friends anyone could ask for. So, because of my impending crazy semester, I chose not to be a part of the soccer team that season. I would go and cheer them on, but would stay away from practice and stat-keeping.
After settling into my room, my friend Nicole and I headed out to the soccer field to visit Sam (our crazy coach from Brazil), check in with the team and see what kind of talent the incoming freshman had. We got there and the craziness began.
Now, some more background... Sam is loud, crazy and fun-loving. Oh, and Brazilian. The entire season of my freshman year was filled with jokes about me and the two other girls on the team. He would always tell us how it was our fault if he got the van stuck on the curb (yes, this actually happened) or he would say we needed boyfriends and to trust him to find us one. You never knew what crazy thing was going to come out of his mouth (in fact, you still don't). But we always ended up laughing and playing along.
So, when Nicole and I got to the field that day, the joking started. Sam wanted to know why we were out there and when we told him it was just to visit and check on the team, he took that as we were checking out the new freshman in hopes to find a date. And so what does he do? He starts pointing out different guys and telling us about them. One of those guys just happened to be Spencer.
The first thing I remember about seeing Spencer was that he was in the golf cart with his leg propped up and a huge bag of ice on his knee. I thought "they are two days into practice... this is ridiculous that he is already injured. Can he actually make it in college soccer?" Of course all of that flashed through my mind in a matter of seconds. Then Sam goes on to say to Nicole that if he could do a certain number of push-ups she had to go on a date with the kid in the golf cart (Spencer). Well we both just laughed and said "okay. Let's see these push-ups!" We said it having complete faith that there was no possible way Sam could do the push-ups, but lo and behold... He could and he did. Then to top it all off, he told me he would do another set and I would have to go on a date with Spencer's roommate, Michael. Umm, we learned our lesson the first time. So that bet was not taken. Nicole and I laughed with Sam and I think Spencer might have been apart of our conversation by that time too. Then we waved goodbye and headed back to the dorm.
A couple of bowling nights, some hockey games and 3 years later, I finally gave in to Spencer's pursuing me and went out with him (and no, Nicole and him never went on that date). And here we are... 4 years after we started dating. Married, but still dating. Still watching hockey. Still laughing with (or at) Sam. And still loving the time we get to spend together.
I can't imagine life without him. He is my best friend. My biggest supporter. My encourager. My spiritual leader. My rock. My Love.
He lets me sleep. He lets me travel. He lets me read. He lets me binge on Netflix. He lets me dream (and voice my dreams). He lets me cry. He lets me be my truest self.
I can't imagine living my life and serving in ministry without him. I am the luckiest girl. Hands down. And it's all thanks to a soccer field, a golf cart and a crazy coach from Brazil.
p.s. Our song has been Dancing in the Minefields by Andrew Peterson since he asked me to be his girlfriend in October of 2010. The video is what he used to ask me when we went on a walk around campus. It will forever have a special place in my iTunes, ringtones and most of all, my heart.
