Dr. Seuss and Ice Cream (#31DaysofMemories)

In college, I had an incredible group of girls to spend my time with. Some of us were friends since freshman year, some of us were family and some of us were roommates. It was sophomore year where we all joined up together and became inseparable. Literally. You wouldn't see just once of us walking across campus. It would be all of us. We all had classes with at least another one of us. We were in the same small group. We lived in the same alcove of the dorm (Ruth Hall had alcoves of 4 rooms... 2 on each side of the hallway). And we were quite often the loudest ones on the floor (and yes, I was an RA and should have done a better job at keeping quiet hours quiet... Sorry fellow H2ers and Mama Caryn!).

One of our absolute favorite things to do together was to read Dr. Seuss and eat ice cream. We had regular Dr. Seuss nights when we were too tired of homework or had too much energy to let loose. If you were to walk in one of our rooms on a Dr. Seuss night, you would most likely catch one of us standing on a desk chair reading the book out loud. Then when we had finished our favorite part of the book we would pass it off. Our favorite Dr. Seuss book to read was Fox in Socks. It was a book of tongue twisters and always set us to laughing til we cried. I can't remember today what everyone's favorite part was. But I can remember A's. She was the queen at reading about tweetle beetles and how they battle. She loved/s it so much that K stood on a chair and read that section out loud as part of her maid of honor toast at A's wedding (in a floor length dress might I add!). It was great. But anyway... every time we got to tweetle beetles A would jump up and get super animated. She even shushed us a few times when we started quoting it with her. That's how serious tweetle beetle battles are. Sometimes, we even got the boys to join in! Seriously. They loved it!

One night, it was real late and we were all done with life. It was just one of those weeks where we were tired and frustrated and just needed a break. So at midnight, we bundled up and headed to the 24 hour Walmart to buy some ice cream. We each bought our favorite Ben & Jerry's and then we headed to the Warehouse which would be pretty much empty by that time of night. It had started raining and so we ran into the Warehouse and then the craziness ensued. We read whatever we could find laying on the table. We used an umbrella to help us fly as we jumped off one of the chairs. And we fell to pieces laughing due to sugar overload and being beyond tired. Eventually we headed to bed, but that night has always been a memory that sets me to giggling.

A few of us have drifted away. A few of us still stay in regular contact. I know that's just a part of life. But I would be lying if I said I didn't miss them. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss our silliness and the little family we had in our dorm. I would be lying if I said I didn't sometimes just wish I could go back to our Dr. Seuss nights and forget about being an adult.

I got lucky when it came to my group of girls at Lincoln. I am lucky and so blessed by them even today.
