Jenny's Story ...

Last week, Friday I believe it was (I'm not entirely sure since I seem to have blurred and lost all track of days here), I went to Absalon Vasquez with Jorge, Carola and Skylar for house church. We went to the house of Consuelo and Josue. They were recently baptized together and are committed to growing and having a passion for God. This was the house church where I read (or attempted to read) Matthew 20:20-28 in Spanish. There were maybe 10 or 11 people who came besides Jorge, Carola, Skylar and myself. One lady who came was named Jenny. Here's her story told to me by Jorge --

Jenny and her husband (not sure of his name) had one son and were pregnant with another (he is now 8 months old). They met Jorge and Carola and started going to the house church with Consuelo and Josue. They walked through the Peace Treaty, were being discipled and find a real love for God. They decided together that they wanted to follow Jesus and raise their children up in the church. But they decided they wanted to wait to get baptized until after the baby was born and the ocean warmed up a bit (which makes sense... the water is usually freezing here in winter and it wouldn't have been good for Jenny and the baby). But they were committed and looking forward to the day when they could get baptized.

Great story, huh? A perfect ending for anyone, right? Wait there's more. Just a few days after they made this commitment to follow Jesus, something happened to really make Jenny question God. You see, her husband was walking home from work and was attempting to cross the highway that separates Absalon Vasquez from Alto Salaverry. It was late at night and a truck didn't see him. He was hit and killed instantly. Apparently it was so gruesome that the only way they were able to identify him was by a picture id in his wallet.

So Jenny was left with a small child and another one just a month away from being born. A new found faith and life in Jesus Christ. And her husband is taken from her. What was she supposed to do? Where she was supposed to turn? She lives in a barrio, no job, small kids. No hope. But Jorge, Carola, Consuelo and Josue were all there to help her get through it. And somehow she came out still holding onto her faith, still holding onto the hope that Jesus Christ offers people. And now she attends house church at Consuelo's and Josue's and has house church in her own house. She helps lead the group of ladies who makes scarves, hats, jewelry, etc. to sell. And she is raising her two children the best way she can. She may have lost hope for a moment when the world seemed to be at it's darkest point. But she found the promise Jesus made to always be with her true.

This is Jenny's story. It's just one of the many that I have heard in the last 7 weeks of me being here in Peru. She is just one of the many that I have been able to meet and hug. She is just one of the many that has been touched by the hand of God and given a hope, a reason for living even when things seem to be dark.

May God bless you and remind you of the hope you have today through Jenny's story.
