"Do you need shinguards? Will you be safe?"
So today I headed out to Buenas Aires for the morning. I went with Skylar, Nicole, Jorge, Carola, Roger, Kelly, Kike, Rosa and Lucy. We went and spent time at the colegio (school) with about 15-20 guys. We played volleyball and soccer. I got there and was itching to play soccer with the boys, but was told they probably wouldn't let me play since I'm a girl. Well Skylar asked Kike if I could play and he asked the guys. A couple of them weren't so excited about the idea, but some of the others were cool with it. After they agreed, Kike asked if I was sure I wanted to play, if I needed shingurads, if I would be safe enough. I just laughed and said I would be fine. So, I jumped in and played. It was so fun. Skylar and Nicole were watching and laughing the whole time. And some of the guys were pretty impressed that I wasn't afraid to challenge them or go after the ball. I just laughed and had a great time.
I laughed to myself because they didn't know that I played with boys in college. Not competitively (for inter-collegiate), but for intramural and practice during the time I was team manager/stat-keeper for the LCU men's team. I never enjoyed scrimmages in high school when we joined the boys for practice. But if I wanted to play in college... I had to play with the boys. So that's what I did. And I wouldn't trade it for anything. It taught me alot. It taught me to be tough. To not back down. To not be afraid. And it made me work harder, earning my spot, earning respect from the boys. Not to mention it was always made me work hard physically and I loved the tough workouts. It was great. And definitely one of my favorite memories from my early years at LCU. All thanks to Sam Rosa and Lynn Laughlin for talking me into keeping stats.
And today, I earned my spot, earned respect for and from the boys at the colegio. Definitely excited to go play again next week with the team and in October with the girls for the Olympics. I've missed soccer. And I'm excited to be back at it, even if for just a few more months, a couple times a week.
