10 Months!!
So this is a day late and will be one of the most girly, sentimental posts you see from me. But yesterday marked 10 months since Spence and I started dating. It's really hard to believe that it's been that long. I know that 10 months isn't that big of a deal. And some people may think it's silly. But for Spence and I, the last 10 months have been part of our adventure in life and in ministry. It's been a good adventure so far. Tough at times. Especially now with us being on two different continents.
When my family and I met up with Spence and his parents in Indi the weekend I went to Louisville for training, he gave me a stack of envelopes. One for each of the month anniversaries that I am in Peru for. I am only allowed to open them on the 9th of each month. At first, I was frustrated because I just wanted to open all of them. But it's been good for me to wait and it helps me have something to look forward to. The card for yesterday was one that made me laugh. He wrote to remind me about how we first met 3 years ago. Here's the story:
Three years ago I headed out to the practice soccer field at LCU with my friend Nicole. She had played the year before and I was the team manager. But that year we weren't going to be doing anything with it due to her transferring to ISU to finish her degree and me working two jobs and being a full-time student. But that day we went to watch practice, check out how the team was doing, meet the newbies and give the coach, Sam Rosa, a hard time. Little did we know what awaited us.
We arrived at the field and there was a freshman sitting in the golf cart with his leg propped up and a bag of ice on his knee. I kinda laughed to myself thinking it was a bit early for a newbie to already be sitting out and icing, but whatever. Sam came over and started his usual harassing of Nicole and I. Sam usually harassed us by talking about us being fat or ugly and never being able to find a guy or having him set us up with someone. Well, he decided he was going to set us up with some of the newbies. Now I was a sophomore and Nicole was a 4th year transfer at ISU. So we just laughed and said yeah right. Well, Sam was determined and made a bet that he could do so many push-ups and if he did it Nicole had to go on a date with the kid in the golf cart. That kid was Spencer. We laughed and said okay. And well Sam did the push-ups, but the date never happened because we saw it as a joke. And then it was my turn. He said he was going to set me up with Spencer's roommate (who actually knew and dated my younger sister a year later). Well, I said I didn't need a boyfriend because they were just too much trouble and I dealt with a enough guys as manager/stat-keeper of the soccer team the year before.
So anyway. That was how I met Spencer. A sunny day at the soccer field, putting up with jokes from Sam. After that we became friends through soccer, mutual friends, bowling nights and basketball games. Our friendship was always founded on the joke from that day at the soccer field. But it grew into a great friendship. One that began to change last summer while we served together on camp teams. It wasn't until September and October that we decided we wanted to see our friendship grow into something more and trusted God with our relationship. Ever since we have been living life together and driving each other crazy at times. But we have made it work and we have learned how to trust and let God guide us every step of the way. If it wasn't for that we probably wouldn't still be together now 10 months later.
He is my best friend. My confidant. He encourages and challenges me. He puts up with my tears and need for being perfect. He accepts me for me. And I do the same for him. We love each others families. And look forward to where God may take us in the future and what He will have us do. 10 months of dating down... only God knows how many more. :)
